A Cry from the DepthsI produced a tryptich specifically for this Easter Holy Week exhibition. With Lent as the inspiration, this trio of images represents a progression from penitance, to mourning, to reflection. The first image represents the pain and suffering both of ourselves (as we recognise our failings during this time of penitence) and of Christ, who on the cross took our sins upon himself and thus bought our redemption. Ash Wednesday is the time for cleansing the soul: a symbol of the cross is marked on one's forehead in ash to represent death and sorrow for sin. This is a sign of penitance and mortality. The second image uses the gravestones to represent mourning for the death of Christ on the cross. The colour purple denotes Christ's royalty and celebrates His continuing sovereignty through the resurrection. The third image shows the final reflection upon what Easter means for us. It looks both inwardly (the praying man) and to the future (the pensive man gazing into the light, beyond the frame). Back to Work |
