My name is Matthew Carson and at the moment art is my hobby (albeit a serious one that I would like to be able to turn into my profession). The unusual web address comes from three things. My art, my love of all things gothic (symbolised by the raven) and my wife, Yvonne (whose name gets shortened to Yve) i.e. Yve's Raven Art. There's also a connection with one of my favourite pieces of literature - the 'Sandman' graphic novels written by Neil Gaiman - the character Eve (the way 'Yve' is pronounced) has a raven called Matthew - a cool coincidence for me. At school I studied A-Level Art and have retained an interest in all things creative ever since. I continue to teach myself photography (originally on a Minolta Dimage S304 and now on a Canon Powershot G6) and the disciplines of computer image manipulation (adding scanned images, objects and text to my pictures) using the fine products from Adobe, amongst others. In recent years I have been experimenting beyond the digital realms, producing paintings, installations and conceptual pieces. I look forward to producing even better work as my skills improve - with your support and encouragement. You can follow my artistic journey on this website, in the Work section. The first phase, from 2002 to 2006, was a time of finding my feet and producing as much as I could. The formation of M:GAG and the subsequent 'Unmasked' exhibition in 2007 was also a significant milestone. It was a launch pad into non-digital forms of expression. As well as regular exhibitions, I often show at ARA - a club-like event for the gothic/metal/alternative scene in Manchester. I have a strong belief in Christ and as a result a number of my images have spiritual overtones. Sometimes this is by design, sometimes it happens without me realising it. Added to this is a liking for the gothic side of life, which some may think is contrary to my beliefs, but which I think is often complimentary - a concept I enjoy exploring. I hope that regardless of personal belief, you find my work pleasing to the eye and/or inspirational and challenging. |
